Philosophy to Launch Nature in a Jar, a New Natural Skin-Care Line - Allure

It's no secret that the skin-care world is experiencing a shift toward more natural-based formulations. More than ever, it seems as though consumers are educating themselves about the ingredients they slather onto their skin — and demanding more transparency in the process. Following suit, big beauty brands are evolving as well. The latest innovation, we can exclusively report, comes from perennial favorite (and Allure Best of Beauty winning) brand Philosophy, which is launching an entirely new naturally-derived line of skin and body care products just in time for Christmas.

Aptly named Nature in a Jar, the collection launches December 15 and includes three skin-care products (a cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer) and two for the body (a shower oil and lotion). All five products are formulated with ingredients that are vegan, gluten-free, and not tested on animals. Equally important is what they are formulated without: parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil, synthetic dyes and fragrances, and dozens of other red-flag ingredients. What's even better — the packaging (sans the caps) is all recyclable and made from post-consumer recycled material.

The impetus for the line came not just from the rise of the ingredient-conscious consumer, but also in response to the ever-harshening realities of modern life. Namely, high pollution and stress levels, plus extreme temperature shifts, all of which, as we know, can negatively affect the skin barrier. The star ingredients in Nature in a Jar, which is billed specifically to address fatigued, sensitive and dry skin, are extremophile desert plants (aka succulents), including agave, jojoba, cactus, and prickly pear oil.

"Nature — just like science — has been in our DNA since the brand's creation in 1996," Margot Humbert, senior vice president global at Philosophy, tells Allure. "Fast-forward to 2020: stressful environments and increased pollution… [have] increased the need for natural and clean formulas. In parallel, consumers want more transparency, have become savvy about ingredients and are more thoughtful about their purchases. It was important for us to be part of this conversation."

Just as we've come to expect from Philosophy, the full product lineup — which I was fortunate to test out ahead of the launch — does not disappoint. First up in the three-part skin-care set is the Gentle Detoxifying Cleanser with Agave ($29), which is just as creamy and foamy as its description promises. It has a beautiful white pearlescent tint to it and is satisfyingly sudsy without drying out my skin (on the contrary, it feels both cleansing and moisturizing at the same time). Next, the Gentle Warming Exfoliator with Jojoba ($36), which, per the name, is a super gentle facial scrub formulated with jojoba and apricot oils, plus fine-grain diatomaceous earth. As a big fan of face scrubs (controversial, I know), I personally love this one — it does really warm up on contact, which feels very calming.

Lastly, my favorite of the three skin-care products, is the Cica Complex Recovery Moisturizer ($49). Formulated with centella asiatica (aka cica) and prickly pear fruit extract, this moisturizer is lightweight and has little to no scent. My dry winter skin absolutely drinks it up. This is likely thanks in part to the prickly pear extract, which New York City-based dermatologist Gary Goldenberg tells me is "gaining popularity as a moisturizer" because "it's rich in antioxidants and natural fatty acids, which help moisture the skin."

Per Nature in a Jar's pollution-fighting ethos, the entire line is full of similarly antioxidant-packed ingredients (including the aforementioned centella asiatica and jojoba oil, plus cactus fruit and hemp seed oil). Quick reminder as to why these are so important: "Antioxidants prevent free radical damage, which are present in the environment," explains cosmetic chemist Ginger King. "Free radicals can weaken our skin and lead to premature sagging or wrinkling."
