Skin care product sales can be part of ophthalmologist's practice - Healio

Joely Kaufman at Hawaiian Eye 2020

Joely Kaufman

KOLOA, Hawaii — Skin care accounts for a significant portion of the $400 billion global beauty and personal care industry, and ophthalmologists have a unique opportunity to intersect with those markets, according to a presenter.

“It’s a huge market,” Joely Kaufman, MD, FAAD, director of Skin Associates of South Florida, said at Hawaiian Eye 2020.

In-office product sales are popular in dermatology offices, Kaufman said, and they can be an addition to ophthalmology offices as well.

According to Kaufman, a recent survey indicated that 80% of patients who leave the dermatology office without purchasing a product will do so at a drugstore or department store within the 24 hours of leaving the physician’s office.

“So, if there are products that you really like and you are going to give [patients] good advice, and they trust your advice, they may as well buy it from you,” Kaufman said. “You’re doing them a service or else they’ll go somewhere else. And they’re getting a worthwhile product...they are spending money on something that is actually going to work.”

Aesthetic specialists are the best source for these recommendations, according to Kaufman.

“Patients trust your opinion more than they do the person at the counter,” she said. – by Patricia Nale, ELS

The 10 Best Winter Skin Care Beauty Products - L'Officiel

Welcome to L'Officiel Lab, a series in which every month, we'll be putting together a thoughtful round-up of the best that the beauty world has to offer. Each product mentioned is obsessively researched and comes highly recommended by a serious skincare lunatic.

The consensus is in: winter is the worst season – at least when it comes to maintaining good winter skin care and any semblance of togetherness. Cold, dark days and nights whip around frozen winds that are actual kryptonite for hair, lips, and complexions. Even in an eventful place like New York City, winter can make you feel like you’re an isolated character in Ethan Frome: freezing, helpless, and holding onto your pickle dish for dear life.

To make matters worse, sufferers of fungal rashes like dermatitis and eczema often count winter weather as a trigger for flakey flare-ups. Makeup application can quickly go from looking smooth to spackled after just a couple of hours on a 20-degree day. To me, winter often feels like a zombie apocalypse, where something malevolent is slowly coming for you and everything you hold near and dear.

There is hope, however, as a good winter skin care routine can help to rejuvenate some of the life you've lost. Hydrating creams and goopy treatments are the best artillery against the impending zombie doom of January. Below, find the 10 best winter skincare products and treatments to help your skin maintain its composure on even the driest winter day.

BeautyBio prioritizes skin care and brick-and-mortar for 2020 - Glossy

As beauty devices continue to find their footing between technological advancements and actual customer adoption, BeautyBio is ramping up its efforts. BeautyBio is best known for its microneedling tools that launched in 2016, but it also sells topical skin care products, which founder and CEO Jamie O’Banion said is key to the company’s expansion.

The brand will launch in 50 Sephora stores in March, following triple-digit growth in existing brick-and-mortar partners including Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus in 2019. In the second quarter, BeautyBio will debut in Mecca and Sephora’s Southeast Asia stores, and by fall, the brand will be present in the remaining 400 Sephora stores in the U.S. O’Banion would not share 2019 sales, but industry sources said the company closed out the year with more than $110 million in retail sales.

O’Banion said customer education about how to use tools with product has been key, especially since beauty devices are not a monthly purchase, nor does she expect them to be. For instance, after launching with QVC a year ago, BeautyBio had its best sales day on-air in January, selling 40,000 units of its R45 topical skin-care system in one day. Meanwhile, during its 12 months with QVC, the brand has sold about 100,000 GloPro microneedling tools. Knowing topical products and repeat purchases of them will fuel the overall company, BeautyBio will also make skin care a focus at Sephora locations.

“It’s been a bit of enigma to me because when you think about how a consumer engages with products, it’s not like we have two separate bathrooms: one for our tools and one for skin care. We use them together, but the industry separates them,” said O’Banion, who noted that some retailers still have separate buyers for the obviously interconnected categories.

Currently, BeautyBio’s skin care accounts for 60% of its sales through retail partners, and on its e-commerce site, the balance is higher: 75% skin care, 25% tools.

At Sephora stores, BeautyBio will use a three-prong approach of product sampling, events and upping its in-store field team, from 25 licensed estheticians to 65. In terms of sampling, O’Banion expects to spend between $125,000 to $150,000 on deluxe skin-care samples for three of its products, which will go to members of the Sephora Beauty Insider program. It is launching six items in Sephora in total. The brand will also do 50 events across the 50 Sephora stores in March, 15 of which will be personal appearances by O’Banion in key markets. The rest will feature BeautyBio’s licensed estheticians who will lead consultations.

Laura Lock, vp of retail sales and education, underscored the brand’s investment in its field fleet, saying its esthetician team strategy has delivered 150% year-over-over total growth to the brand.

“They are our most successful event [strategy] and have strengthened our position in the skin care category as a key principle,” she said.

O’Banion has found this field strategy tool to be even more valuable than the paid influencer-focused model that many beauty brands prefer. In fact, BeautyBio does not pay influencers and has only gifted products to “skin-obsessed” ambassadors.

“Launching into retail is not for the faint of heart, so it’s about a structural, sound team to scale,” said O’Banion.

Best 17 skincare products for dark skin, according to dermatologists - NBCNews.com

Adjusting your skincare routine to your skin type is significant to finding a workable routine: normal, oily, combination or dry. Likewise, it's similarly important to base it on your skin tone or color.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, for example, people with darker skin tones face a unique set of skincare needs.

  • Without proper hydration, dry skin can look gray and ashy.
  • Hyperpigmentation — the overproduction of melanin in the skin — can be caused by UV rays and is probably the most common concern for people of color.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — wherein healing skin overproduces melanin — can leave a dark scar where a blemish once lived.

Having said that, there is a slew of skincare products that can help promote healthier skin. To best protect, nourish and treat skin of color, we consulted doctors and experts on some of the best products to get you through your skincare routine. We sorted them through the six essential skincare ingredients experts recommended:

  1. SPF skincare for dark skin
  2. Retinol skincare for dark skin
  3. Skincare with hyaluronic acid
  4. Skin brighteners
  5. Skincare with antioxidants
  6. Vitamin C-infused skincare

Best SPF skincare for dark skin

Every single dermatologist we consulted emphasized the importance of using sunscreen to promote skin health. Sounds obvious, right? People with darker skin are often told they don’t need sunscreen, which is a deeply incorrect and potentially dangerous piece of advice.

“Daily SPF — at least 30 — is critical for prevention and treatment of hyperpigmentation, as well as for prevention of skin cancer,” Sara Perkins, MD, an assistant professor with the Department of Dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, told NBC News. “This is an absolute must for all skin types, including skin of color.”

Perkins, who’s also the clinical advisor to Hims and Hers, considers EltaMD's SPF offerings her “top choice.”

1. EltaMD UV Elements Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 44 Sunscreen

This tinted, mineral sunscreen protects your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays to prevent early signs of aging and burning.

2. EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen

Hyaluronic acid is the hero ingredient in this moisturizer that doubles as a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

3. EltaMD UV Clear Facial Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 Sunscreen

For those prone to acne or hyperpigmentation, this sunscreen includes niacinamide (Vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants — which we'll dive into below. Perkins gave an honorable mention to La Roche Posay Anthelios facial sunscreen, as well.

4. SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 Sunscreen

Jared Jagdeo, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and Ever/Body’s medical director, recommended SkinCeuticals’ take on SPF.

“This product is outstanding, blends in perfectly to any skin tone and never leaves that chalky look,” said Jagdeo, who added that what really makes for a great sunscreen is your desire to use it everyday.

5. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch, Water-Resistant SPF 100+ Sunscreen

This sunscreen is beloved by dermatologists because it was formulated to be fail-proof. “This specific sunscreen was studied in the real world and shown to be more effective in preventing sunburn as compared to sunscreens with lower SPF levels,” Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital's dermatology department, told NBC News.

Best retinol skincare for dark skin

The Morning Rundown

Get a head start on the morning's top stories.

Retinol is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to anti-aging skincare.

"This vitamin A derivative truly has clinically-proven anti-aging properties — but it can also help with pigmentation,” Perkins explained. “It's also very effective in the treatment of acne. These can be quite irritating so I recommend starting with the lower concentrations first.”

6. MARA Evening Primrose Green Tea Algae Retinol Face Oil

As with any skincare product, it comes down to how you use it, and when. Over-the-counter retinols are best used in the evening. Irritation and dryness are common side effects. Pairing a retinol product with a moisturizer can help avoid some of that, Perkins said. Or you can use a gentle retinol oil like MARA Evening Primrose Green Tea Algae Retinol Face Oil.

7. RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Retinol Night Cream

“This budget-friendly night treatment contains both alpha hydroxy acids, which help to unstick and exfoliate dulling, dead skin cells immediately, as well as retinol, which stimulates cell turnover and new collagen production over time,” Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a dermatologist in Los Angeles, told NBC News. “Together, these help to reduce the appearance of fine lines with regular use over two to three months.”

8. Vichy LiftActiv Retinol HA Advanced Concentrate

The combo of retinol and hyaluronic acid is what makes this one a game-changer. “This retinoid serum visibly fills and reduces wrinkles, giving skin a smoother and more plumped appearance,” says Howard Sobel, MD, New York City dermatologist and founder of Sobel Skin.

Best skincare with hyaluronic acid

Another significant ingredient in skincare for most skin types is hyaluronic acid, “a natural sugar molecule that occurs in our body and helps to attract water, so it functions as a great moisturizer,” said Marisa Garshick, MD, a dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in New York City.

“It keeps the skin looking fresh and hydrated," Garshick told NBC News.

9. Ghost Democracy Floodgate Hyaluronic Acid Serum

“In darker skin tones, dryness frequently manifests as an ashy or grayish appearance of the skin,” dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told NBC News. “Hyaluronic acid is a go-to ingredient to pump all skin types, and is particularly useful in those with darker skin. It acts like a sponge binding to 1000 times its weight in water.”

10. DefenAge Men's Kit

And let’s not forget dark skinned men who, yes, also need to take care of their skin. Jagdeo recommends the DefenAge Men's Kit, its key ingredients including a proprietary peptide blend, along with soothing niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, designed to help users achieve a smooth, well-hydrated and improved complexion.

He says it’s “ideal for the man who wants to look his best with an easy-to-use, all-in-one regimen,” adding that the “comprehensive kit addresses most skin concerns.”

Best skin brightening products

A lot of serums formulated to brighten skin also have the bonus effect of treating hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

11. Neutrogena Bright Boost Illuminating Serum

Zeichner recommended Neutrogena’s Bright Boost Serum. “Pigmentary disorders are extremely common among patients with darker skin types,” he explained. “Turmeric extract has long been used in skin care because of its ability to brighten unwanted pigmentation and even skin tone.”

12. SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum

Bradley Bloom, MD, of Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, recommended SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum. “It combines some of the most effective brightening ingredients, including niacinamide, in a non-irritating formula,” he said.

13. SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense

Jagdeo said he recommends SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense for one specific reason: “Discoloration defense is specially formulated with a combination of anti-pigment agents designed to even out the tone of the skin.”

Best skincare with antioxidants

Another heavily recommended ingredient by the dermatologists we consulted: antioxidants. To briefly summarize: "Antioxidant serums help protect your skin from the free radicals you're exposed to on a daily basis. They also aid in the prevention of fine lines and other visible signs of aging, and can heal and repair skin," Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and author of the book "Skin Rules: Trade Secrets From a Top New York Dermatologist," told NBC News.

Sapna Palep, MD, of Spring Street Dermatology recommended the ALASTIN Restorative Skin Complex. "It’s chock full of potent antioxidants to help even skin tone while also plumping the skin and combating fine lines and wrinkles.” Palep explained. "It’s so versatile for all skin tones, including darker complexions.”

15. Carter+Jane The Everything Oil

Hadley King, a board certified dermatologist, is a fan of The Everything Oil. “It contains cold pressed, organic prickly pear seed oil, organic avocado oil, organic sweet almond oil and organic aloe vera. These ingredients both hydrate and moisturize, and they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well. And it's vegan, organic and cruelty-free and it's formulated without water, alcohol or silicone. It's also a great option for brightening, which is often a plus for dark skin tones. The ingredients work together to brighten the skin by offering antioxidant protection, anti-inflammatory properties, increased cell turnover, hydration and increased collagen production. There are no potentially irritating ingredients to lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.”

Best Vitamin C-infused skincare

Vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, is a substantial antioxidant that stimulates collagen production and fights UV damage and pigmentation — not to mention helps stave off colds. You can get your Vitamin C from certain foods — or you can wear it on your face.

“Formulation, packaging and storage are key here as it oxides quickly when exposed to light,” Perkins said about what readers should keep in mind. Vitamin C can go from useable to dysfunction seemingly overnight.

16. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum for Skin with Vitamins C and E

Both Jagdeo and Palep recommended the C E Ferulic serum, which Jagdeo uses for both himself and his clients, and called “the hero product by which the rest of the cosmeceutical industry is measured.”

It’s an investment — one Palep said is worth it, as it remains active for multiple days and the included dropper keeps you using precisely how much you need to with little waste.

“It’s packed with antioxidants that work great on darker skin tones for brightening and destroying free radicals,” she added.

17. Schaf Revitalizing Serum

King recommends Schaf Revitalizing Serum, which was formulated specifically for dark spots and fine lines, making it a great fit for dark skin tones.

“Vitamin C boosts brightness through its antioxidant properties, hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin, and peptides help stimulate collagen production to diminish fine lines,” she said. It’s also vegan and cruelty free.

The ultimate result everyone wants is one thing: Great skin. Skin care is self-care so treat yourself well.

Evan Ross Go to Bed with Me Video - Nightly Skin Care - HarpersBAZAAR.com

After his wife and fellow musician, Ashlee Simpson Ross, showed us her nightly skin care routine in the last episode of Go to Bed with Me, Evan Ross is now showing us what he uses to take care of his skin. In addition to his own products, Ross shares an appreciation for particular brands, from La Mer to Nyakio, with his wife.

With sensitive skin, Ross makes sure to curate a selection of products that won't irritate his face. He starts off by using The Cleansing Foam by La Mer, a brand his other half also uses in her routine. "It's my wife's favorite, as well as mine now," he says. "She put me onto it." He also mentions that he appreciates the product for how easy and efficient it is.

Next, Ross opts for an exfoliating and cooling mask. "I'm very masculine too, but I do like pretty-looking bottles," Ross says of Dior's Hydra Life Glow Better Fresh Jelly Mask.

He adds that he uses only a small amount when applying it to his face. "I don't use too much because it's Dior and it's a very small package, and no one needs to be buying eight millions of these," he says. "You could tell my wife that."

Watch the video above to see how Ross incorporates the rest of his (and his wife's) favorite beauty products into his skin care routine.

Silk as a Skin-Care Ingredient — Benefits, Recommendations, Reviews - Allure

According to urban myth, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria owned a bulletproof vest woven from silk. Unfortunately, he wasn't wearing it when he was fatally shot in 1914, thereby throwing the world into World War I. It has since been shown that this silk would have halted a bullet of the era. Silk may be marred by a few drops of salad dressing, but weak it is not.

This surprising resilience has not gone unnoticed by skin-care brands. "There are two proteins in silk with supposed benefits: sericin and fibroin," says Morgan Rabach, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Mount Sinai in New York City. "Sericin forms a layer of protection over the skin and may help promote hydration. Fibroin may help repair skin cells and balance moisture levels." Tatcha's silk products weave together both proteins, while Silk Therapeutics' line includes fibroin for its purported ability to boost collagen. (Please note, dear readers, the use of supposed, may, and purported.)

Of course, that's a lot of worms. After studying silk proteins for over a decade, skin-care brand Eighteen B's chief science officer Lindsay Wray, a biomedical engineer, realized synthetic versions could be more effective at maintaining collagen function and supporting a healthy skin barrier. Natural silks’ benefits get watered down during a process known as hydrolysis, which degrades its proteins.

But big picture: "The science is not substantial enough to back silk alone as a wrinkle reducer like retinol," says New York City dermatologist Dendy Engelman. "However, there are studies pointing toward silk’s ability to improve penetration for actives that can help with wound healing." Hyaluronic acid (a star skin healer) is indeed in Eighteen B's products. For now, expect silk to hydrate, protect, and stop a bullet. Unlined skin may be another story.

#PillowTalkDerm Shereene Idriss's Skincare Routine - The Cut

Photo: Courtesy of Shereene Idriss

Want more skin care? Join The Beauty Group.

Dr. Shereene Idriss had a big 2019. When the Cut interviewed her in March, the dermatologist had 38,000 Instagram followers. Less than a year later, her following has skyrocketed to 160,000 — and with good reason. Every Sunday, Idriss lays in bed and doles out advice on her Stories under the hashtag #PillowTalkDerm. She covers everything from acne to Botox to pregnancy skin care, which she dealt with last year when she was pregnant with a baby boy.

Thanks to childbirth, “my hormones have been out of whack recently,” she says, “and they’ve triggered pigmentary changes in my skin, particularly on my face.” She’s been using brightening agents and staying out of the sun, and she’s back on a prescription retinoid now that she’s finally finished breastfeeding. “I’m starting slow and steady with a 0.025 percent prescription. It can be irritating if you start off too aggressively — retinoid is a very potent ingredient. You can begin using it a couple times a week and build up to using it every night. I wouldn’t recommend this product to someone who has extremely sensitive skin — they should stick to retinols, which you can get over the counter.”

Even if you’re not a dermatologist yourself, she says, the best thing you can do is read up on skin-care ingredients and your skin type. “The sad truth is that dermatology is a privilege for those with insurance,” she acknowledges. “You have to decide whether you want to spend the money on treatment, or buying skin-care products more often.” When deciding between the two, she has an analogy: “Would you rather pay for a gym membership and train in a facility or run outside for free? There’s nothing wrong with either, but if you are one of those people who would rather run outside, I recommend getting to know the products on the market and educating yourself.”

Read on for six #PillowTalkDerm–approved products, including her favorite $9 drugstore cleanser, face pads that keep pigmentation at bay, and a luxury moisturizer worth its hefty price tag.

The Micellar Water
Bioderma Sensibio H2O

“I use this micellar water as a makeup remover and an overall ‘crud’ remover. I use this one in particular because I feel like it’s gentle and effective enough to do the heavy work without irritating my face and leaving an oily residue.”

The Cleanser
Unscented Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser

“After micellar water, I wash my face with a gentle cleanser to remove any remaining impurities. I double cleanse to make sure I remove anything remaining on my skin that the micellar water might have missed. You don’t need to spend a million dollars on a cleanser, and I like that this cleanser is gentle without being irritating or harsh without overdrying my skin. It’s non-foaming and can be used in all year throughout the different seasons, which is another reason I like it.”

The Face Pads
First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads

“I exfoliate every other day with this combination of lactic and glycolic acid to help tone and brighten my skin. The pads keep pigmentation at bay. When I laid off on use for like two weeks, I noticed pigmentation became a little darker.”

The Vitamin C
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

“Vitamin C helps the appearance of sun-stressed skin while protecting from ongoing free-radical damage. Free radicals are the result of environmental stressors, which can damage the core of your cells. Vitamin C neutralizes them. SkinCeuticals is the brand I like at the moment because it has a high concentration of Vitamin C and doesn’t break me out, but I do alternate between a variety of other brands, too.”

The Serum
SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum

“Because discoloration is the bane of my existence, I go a step further and use this serum to help optimize results and brighten. This product has topical tranexamic acid that brightens your skin further. When I say ‘brighten,’ I mean ‘improve and create an even skin tone throughout,’ meaning fewer dark spots.”

The Moisturizer
La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler

“With fall comes a change in humidity, so I swap my moisturizer for a thicker cream. This one, although pricey, goes a long way and lasts me the full season. It is a complete indulgence that I allow myself because I know it will last me six months — a little really does go a long way. You can, of course, always find other great creams on the market that have a lower price point.”
