Western Massachusetts rugby players past and present gathered at The Munich Haus Restaurant this weekend to share stories, receive awards and enjoy a buffet in celebration of the half-century of the rugby club.

The Springfield Rifles Rugby Club was founded in the summer of 1969 by several athletes from the Greater Springfield area, playing their first match against Schenectady, New York.

Since then the Rifles have grown a diverse team, with players originating from as far away as South Africa. Competing in the New England Rugby Football Union, they play teams from all over the North East and regularly traveling to tournaments across the East Coast.

Past player and coach of the Rifles, Tom “Doc’ Kennedy said that there were only a couple of players that knew how the game worked when he joined in 1974. Within a season after he took over he had the team working as a unit and holding their own against Boston teams.

“[The team] worked together as a unit,” said Kennedy. “Fourteen guys supported the one with the ball.”

Kennedy who was originally from the Republic of Ireland came to the US over 40 years ago and is pleased that the sport has gained popularity in the states.

Rugby consists of 15 players per team playing two 40 minute halves. Rugby has the contact of American Football without the pads, the accurate passing of basketball, the kicking of soccer and the strategy of chess.
