Scrap conversions and reduce rugby's 'boring time', urges ex-England international Brian Moore - Stuff.co.nz

Conversion kicks - such as this one by All Black Richie Mo'unga in the Rugby World Cup bronze playoff - should be outlawed to speed up rugby, claims former England hooker Brian Moore.

Former England hooker Brian Moore says rugby authorities should scrap conversions and do more to speed up the game.

Moore, who played 64 tests between 1987 and 1995, made the call in his regular Daily Telegraph column.

The 57-year-old solicitor turned television pundit, said he "would remove conversions and make a try seven points".

"Why should a thrilling back movement, resulting in a try in the corner, have a much more difficult extra two points than one driven over near the posts after an attritional succession of short drives from rucks? Take away the minute allowed to complete a conversion and you probably free up five minutes in an average game."

Former England hooker Brian Moore reckons rugby would be less boring if time wasting was cracked down upon.

Former England hooker Brian Moore reckons rugby would be less boring if time wasting was cracked down upon.

Moore sat among the 73,000 crowd at Twickenham last weekend for Harlequins' 30-30 draw with the Leicester Tigers and shared spectators' frustration at "interminable breaks in play that could be eradicated to make watching more enjoyable".

He believed time wasting was resulting in most professional rugby matches lasting up to 100 minutes and said action needed to be taken around kicks at goal, lineouts, scrums and defensive box kicks.

Moore was concerned that one Leicester shot at goal took 1 minute 45 seconds to complete after the referee's ruling - well over the 1 minute limit allowed by the rulebook.

Some scrums took 1 minute 30 seconds, whereas Moore felt it should take just 25 seconds for both teams to engage.

He was also concerned many lineouts were taking "well over a minute".

"How about for line-outs and scrums having an NFL-style delay of game call? Go over a specified time limit and the set-piece is moved 10 yards back or forward or the put-in/throw-in is reversed, depending on which side offend."

Halfbacks were taking too much time over box kicks from rucks, Moore said. Referees should count five seconds from the time the ruck is won.

"With all these issues addressed we could probably remove at least 10 minutes from the boring time now being foisted on the paying public."
