A fight breaks out between Saracens and Exeter, leading to a red card to Exeter's England prop Harry Williams.

England prop Harry Williams was sent off after leaving the bench to join a brawl as tensions boiled over in a grudge match between English rugby premiership heavyweights Exeter and Saracens.

Williams had been sinbinned for the first time in his career earlier in the second half of the match won 14-7 by his Exeter team at their Sandy Park home ground on Sunday (Monday NZ time).

The 132kg front rower received a red card after Saracens centre Duncan Taylor reacted after being tackled into touch by Exeter's Australian halfback Nic White in the 77th minute.

Williams - yellow carded earlier for collapsing a maul - rushed in to join the action as a mass melee ensued, leading to an early shower after referee Wayne Barnes brandished a red card.

The Daily Mail reported Williams, 28, "had a heated verbal exchange with test teammate Mako Vunipola" as he was ushered off the field.

Exeter's victory - courtesy of tries to White and Jacques Vermeulen - allowed the Devon club to return to the top of the premiership.

The Chiefs looked like they were about to hold Saracens scoreless until Exeter captain, former Wallabies forward Dave Dennis, conceded a penalty try near fulltime after deliberately collapsing a maul.

The game was played against a backdrop of bitterness after champions Saracens were hit with a 35-point deduction and a £5 million ($NZ 10 million) fine for salary cap breaches.

Exeter have lost to Saracens in three of the last four premiership finals. Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe has called for Saracens to be booted out of the league, claiming Saracens' cheating had cost Exeter two titles.

Exeter coach Rob Baxter made some passionate comments after the match, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: "There are supporters of rugby clubs who have watched coaches getting sacked and players leave and all different kinds of things, and part of that has been Saracens cheating.

"You can't run away from it. Sometimes the people who have pointed out that Saracens have cheated almost get pointed out to be the bad guys. Well the people who have made comment on it aren't the cheats. And that is the bit that some rugby supporters have felt more frustrated about."

The loss to Exeter was Saracens' first reverse since the 35-point penalty was imposed.

They are bottom of the 12th premiership - 18 points behind 11-ranked Leicester Tigers, who salvaged a 30-30 draw against Harlequins before 75,000 fans at Twickenham after a late try by New Zealand outside back Telusa Veainu.

Exter took over top spot from Chris Boyd's Northampton Saints, who beat third-ranked Gloucester 33-26 in a seven-try thriller despite a hat-trick of tries by Gloucester's 18-year-old Welsh wing Louis Rees-Zammut.

Wasps back Jacob Umaga scored a try and kicked three conversions and former All Blacks midfielder Malakai Fekitoa also dotted down in a 26-21 win over Pat Lam's Bristol Bears.
